This year, since I live halfway across the world, I get to watch Wimbledon (first time ever!) and the French Open live, in progress because in California, matches are in the wee hours of the morning, like 3am or something. You'd have to be a die-hard fan of tennis to get up that early, and its not as fun to watch when you already know the results. So what have we gathered so far? Our favorite contender of the moment:
We love Ana Ivanovic.
Even though she plays well and as of RIGHT NOW ranks as the world's No. 1 female tennis player, what I love most about Ana Ivanovic is that she is not Maria Sharapova. Why? Ana doesn't realize that she has great looks on top of having a kick-ass forehand. Sharapova thinks she is the cat's pajamas, so she thinks that she can now do her own fashion line and wear this ugly ruffled waistcoast thing for a tennis top (see below). She wears big dangly earrings when she plays, which I always hope that they get caught in her racket. Yes, so do the Williams sisters but somehow they get away with it..maybe because Maria earns a lot more money on endorsements (an estimated $20 million a year??), so it just makes her easier to hate (like Anna Kournikova). To be fair, I like how Sharapova knows that everybody doesn't like her. Note* I purposely put this hilariously hideous picture of her playing tennis in a pose in which NO ONE can ever look good.
On the other hand, everyone can love Ivanovic because she just is that loveable, as shown in her picture above. How can you not love a darling happy face like that? And she does that cute fist pump after every winning point, very unlike that bat shriek that some Russian tennis players make after every shot. She has possibly one of the most great humbled attitudes in tennis, always citing luck and hard work as a reason for her accomplishments (like Federer the Great), and she always carries that smile with her throughout her matches. She has the potential to be as great as classy Justine Henin. In conclusion, we love you Ana! Even if you hang out with Rafael Nadal.
